Medical Assisting: Learn More

Looking for an interesting career where you’ll make a difference in the lives of others? Consider a career in medical assisting! The demand for trained Medical Assistants is growing, and you can help meet it. The combination of technological advances in medicine, increased life expectancy and an appreciation for the flexibility of trained Medical Assistants is making the job outlook bright!

Medical Assistants often choose to specialize in either administrative or clinical work. In an administrative track, medical office assistants perform many of the same functions as traditional office assistants – but with an extra attention to detail. Medical office assistants need to be able to work quickly and accurately because people’s lives may depend on it! Administrative Medical Aassistants perform such functions as insurance billing, medical histories, financial recordkeeping and interoffice communications.

The duties of clinical Medical Assistants can vary according to state law. In a clinical track, Medical Assistants may take medical histories, record vital signs, explain treatments and procedures to patients, or assist physicians during examinations. They may also perform basic laboratory tests, administer medications, draw blood, or instruct patients about medications or special diets.

Many Medical Assistants are also responsible for preparing examining rooms, sterilizing equipment and maintaining inventory.

While some Medical Assistants learn through on-the-job training, many complete a specialized program, learning more about anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and insurance processing. Medical Assisting training also covers basic laboratory techniques, clinical and diagnostic processes, medical ethics, and pharmaceutical principles.

Many Medical Assistants find future employment in physcians’ offices, hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
